Some Healthy, Some Not So Healthy Ingredient Substitutions!
In the midst of the holiday cooking we always seem to run out of something, or we forgot the sour cream & eggs at the store? Raise your hand if your with me on this. It’s also no secret that most of us pack on a few pounds during this time time of the year as well. And why wouldn’t we with out the deliciousness going on, the rich sauces, the sugar cookies and don’t forget the warm toasted baguettes slathered with a warm sun-dried tomato spread ! Come on, who says no to that?
We thought it would helpful to put together a list of some healthy and not so healthy ingredient substitutions as we have officially entered the holiday cooking season. We have a little over 25 days til the big day arrives and don’t forget New Years right on its heels. That means a lot of cooking for most of us!

Here's a list of some healthy substitutions:
Bacon: Substitute with Cal Sun Dry's SmokedSun-Dried Tomatoes
Bread Crumbs: Substitute with rolled oats or crushed bran cereal
Butter or oil in baking: Substitute with applesauce
Eggs: Substitute with two egg whites or ¼ cup egg substitute for each egg
Flour (all-purpose): Substitute whole-wheat flour for half of the called for all-purpose
Ground Beef: Substitute with ground chicken or turkey
Mayonnaise: Substitute with reduced fat mayonnaise or yogurt
Sour Cream: Substitute with low or fat free or plain low fat yogurt
Salt, table: Substitute with fresh herbs,citrus juices,rice vinegars or salt free mix
DON'T HAVE THIS: USE THIS:
1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp baking soda + 1/2 tsp cream of tarter
1 cup unsalted butter 1cup of shortening or 7/8 cup of vegetable oil 1 tsp cream of tater 2 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice
1 cup buttermilk 1 TB lemon juice or vinegar + enough milk to make 1cup
1 egg 1/4 egg substitute or 1/4 cup silken tofu
1 sour cream 1cup yogurt
